ABOUT SCIENTIST
李雅堂,美国南加利福尼亚大学博士、加州理工学院博士后。他整合在体电生理记录、在体双光子和宽视场钙成像、光遗传学技术、行为量化分析、计算模型来研究视觉信息处理的神经机制和视觉本能行为的神经环路。在Nature Neuroscience, Neuron, Current Biology, eLife, The Journal of Neuroscience等国际期刊发表论文,曾获得Helen Hay Whitney Postdoctoral Fellowship和NIH K99/R00等奖项。

Tell us about the research interests of your lab.
每天早晨醒来,海量的视觉数据便涌入我们眼睛,而大脑只提取亿分之一的信息来指导我们的行为。举个例子,看过刑侦剧的人都知道,同样都是路过案发现场的人,有些人能注意到一些异常情况,为破案提供有用的细节,而有些人就对当时的情景完全没有印象。我们实验室的主要工作就是想了解,在这个过程中,大脑是如何处理视觉输入的大量数据,并筛选出对我们有用的那么一点信息。
具体分为四个方向:一是大脑对视觉信息的编解码,二是视觉注意的神经机制,三是视觉诱发本能行为的神经环路,四是大脑启发的计算机视觉算法。
Since we wake up in the morning,massive visual data start flowing into our eyes, but the brain only extracts a tiny bit of information to guide our behaviors.For example, in crime dramas,among all persons who are at the crime scene,only a few can notice the detailsthat are important to crack a criminal case,while the others can not.My lab is interested in understanding such visual processing,namely, how our brain processes such massive visual dataand sifts the tiny bit of information that is useful to our behavior.
We have four specific research directions:neural coding for visual information,neural mechanisms for visual attention,neural circuits underlying visually evoked innate behavior,and brain-inspired computer vision.

What scientific problems do you want to solve most in the short and long term?

My short-term goal is to understandthe role of superior colliculus in visual feature representation, visual attention,and visually evoked innate behavior.
My long-term goal is to reveal what are the roles of different brain regions,including SC and visual cortices,in extracting the key visual information.I expect that my researchwill uncover principles in neuroscience,inspire the next generation of artificial intelligence,and shed light on the treatment of visual deficits,such as visual hallucination and dyslexia.

为什么选择加入脑中心?
Why choose CIBR?
我加入脑中心主要有三个原因。首先,脑中心为独立实验室提供了充足而稳定的科研经费;其次,脑中心有10个辅助平台来帮助处理技术上的难题;最后,脑中心的科研气氛比较浓厚,鼓励不同实验室之间的跨学科合作,而且跟国际接轨,有很多学术交流的机会。总而言之,我认为脑中心是研究大脑最理想的选择。
I joined CIBR mainly for three reasons.First, CIBR provides strong and sustained financial support for running the lab.Second, it has 10 core facilities to provide excellent technical support.Finally, it provides great opportunitiesfor interdisciplinary collaboration between labsand scientific communication across the country and internationally.I think it’s an ideal place for studying how the brain works.
